Gypsum Board: A Versatile and Essential Material for Modern Construction

Gypsum board, commonly known as drywall, plasterboard, or wallboard, is a panel product used globally to form the interior walls and ceilings of buildings. Its core is primarily composed of gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate), a non-combustible mineral, which is calcined to remove water and then rehydrated with additives to form a slurry. This slurry is poured between two continuous sheets of heavy paper (face paper and back paper) and allowed to set into a solid, rigid panel. The paper facings provide tensile strength and a surface for finishing, while additives in the core can impart properties like mold resistance, moisture resistance, or enhanced fire resistance. The standard manufacturing process allows for high-volume, efficient production of large, lightweight panels that are easily cut and installed.

The advantages of gypsum board over traditional wet plaster systems are profound, driving its dominance in construction. It enables fast, clean, and dry installation, dramatically reducing construction timelines. Its inherent fire resistance is critical; the chemically combined water in the gypsum core (about 21% by weight) is released as steam when exposed to fire, effectively retarding heat transmission. Specialized types include Type X for enhanced fire ratings, moisture-resistant (MR) boards for bathrooms, and abuse-resistant boards for high-traffic areas. Gypsum board forms the substrate for virtually all interior paint, wallpaper, and texture finishes. From residential homes to commercial skyscrapers, it provides a smooth, stable, and code-compliant surface for interior spaces, making it one of the most ubiquitous and essential building materials in the world.
